The Haven Project is based on a tradition of service user research. In the late 1990’s a group of 50 local service users, all of whom had attracted the diagnosis, worked with Heather Castillo on service-user-focused research about personality disorder.

This research study was published as a book in 2003 (see details below). The publication was preceded and followed by a number of journal articles (see links to the articles below). Ideas about how The Haven should be set up and run were based on this research.

In 2004 the first group that was set up at The Haven was the Research Group, which included Heather Castillo and 9 Haven clients. The group worked for 5 years collecting research data from 60 Haven clients and additional family members and carers. The research has aimed to map the process of recovery in personality disorder, using The Haven as a case study.

The pyramid below represents a hierarchy of progress in the journey of recovery for personality disorder.

The study is available as a full research report “The Process of Recovery for People Diagnosed with Personality Disorder – A Case Study of The Haven” (see link to Abstract below).
